Yes. Tablature is important for the fact that it is an easy notation to learn and gives students instant access to play popular songs that they want to learn. But, TAB will only get you so far. Learning how to read the treble clef (which is what guitar is in) is far better. Number one is that if you play guitar in a jazz band you will never see TAB. You will instead be reading notes and chord symbols. If you want to do an analysis of a song to study chord/ scale relationships you need to know the note names not just a string and a fret. Learning proper notation is the way to go. It is part of the universal language of music.

Yes. In this day and age there exists an overwhelming body of method books. I have done extensive research into what is out there. I use several different method books to teach different aspects of music including theory, reading and improvisation. I am a big fan of the play along methods.
